Small mammals, such as foxes and rabbits, are the most common kind of animals to be involved in collisions, accounting for 8,580 known cases in the UK every year.

Birds, such as pheasants and pigeons, are next, accounting for 4,652, followed by large mammals - mostly deer - which are involved in 1,000 road accidents, according to GoCompare.

In terms of individual animals, badgers were the most run-over accounting for 2,229 accidents in a year, followed by pheasants (2,082) and hedgehogs (1,910). iNews, 2021
